Morning Stiffness?

Why do you wake up stiff after a full nights sleep?
You slept a full night, but still wake up with a tight neck or aching back and it can be frustrating. The reason is simple—your body stays in one position for hours while you sleep. When muscles stay in the same position too long, they can tighten, and joints can become compressed or irritated. That’s why even a good night’s sleep can leave you feeling stiff.

Sleep Position Matters

  • Stomach sleeping: The hardest on your spine. Your neck stays turned to one side and your lower back over-arches, creating strain.
  • Side Sleeping: A good option when done properly. A common position, but it can still place stress on the shoulders and hips if your body isn’t well supported.
  • Back sleeping: The most supportive position. Keeps your head, neck, and spine aligned—just make sure your pillow supports your neck without pushing your head forward.
  • Your mattress: Too soft = uneven sinking. Too firm = poor support for natural curves.
  • Most mattresses should be replaced every 7–10 years to maintain proper support.

Solutions That Work
Start by paying attention to your sleep position and make small adjustments. If you sleep on your side, placing a pillow between your knees can help, while back sleepers may benefit from putting a pillow under their knees. Adding some gentle stretching before bed can also help prevent muscles from tightening overnight.

If you’re still waking up stiff, it may be time for a chiropractic checkup. At Uptown Chiropractic, we can assess your spine and help you experience what mornings feel like when your body is .

Why do you wake up stiff after a full nights sleep?
You got a full 8 hours of sleep—so why do you still wake up feeling stiff, tight, and sore?  If your neck feels locked, your back aches, and it takes a while to “loosen up” in the morning, you’re not alone. A good night’s sleep should leave you feeling refreshed—but sometimes, it does the opposite.

What’s Happening?
During the day, your body is constantly moving. At night, it stays in one position for hours. This can lead to:

- Muscles tightening when held in the same position too long
- Joints becoming compressed or irritated
- Reduced circulation to certain areas

Common Sleep Position Problems:
Stomach sleeping: The least spine-friendly position. Your neck stays twisted to one side, and your lower back arches—both of which can cause strain.
Back sleeping: The best position for spinal alignment. Make sure your pillow supports the natural curve of your neck without pushing your head forward.

Your mattress matters:

Too soft → your body sinks unevenly
Too firm → doesn’t support your natural curves
Most mattresses last 7–10 years

Simple Solutions That Work:

Side sleepers: place a pillow between your knees
Back sleepers: place a pillow under your knees
Try gentle stretching before bed to reduce overnight stiffness

Still Waking Up Stiff?
If you’ve made these changes and still feel stiff in the morning, it may be time to check-in with your chiropractor for an assessment.  We can help identify underlying issues and get your spine moving the way it should - so you can finally wake up feeling refreshed.
