It may sound funny, but it works! Walking like a penguin - slowly with short steps - helps keep your centre of gravity over your feet. Try to land with a flatter foot instead of the usual heel-to-toe, and point your feet slightly outwards as you walk. Also, remember to keep your hands out of your pockets and extend your arms slightly to help with balance.
Taking a few simple precautions can help you stay upright, safe and pain-free during the winter months:
- Wear proper winter footwear with thick, non slip soles for better grip on icy surfaces.
- Test potentially slippery areas by lightly tapping your foot before stepping fully.
- When available, use handrails for added support.
- Regular exercise helps strengthen muscles, improve flexibility and enhance coordination- all important for preventing falls.
- Keep your hands free whenever possible and put your phone away while walking.
If you take a tumble, don't ignore it. Even minor falls can cause spinal or joint issues that worsen over time.
